Archiday: 29-year old University Architecture Tutor working in Nottingham
Written by Aliya, Edited by Aliya @archistudentnotes
Hello, Aliya here trying out a day in the life submission! Today I was working at the university I used to study at, teaching on the Architecture in Context course so…
Would you have tackled the day any differently?
The morning
My day started at 3am, then 5.30am and then 7am -_- . If you’ve read my ArchiWeek you know my sleep is a bit of a problem that I am trying to figure out.
Will let you know when I have…
Anyway, I got up at 7am got ready and sat at my desk. I usually have the ArchiWeek submission from the writer of the week edited and ready to go to publish at midnight but this week has been a bit meh so whilst the body of the text was up, I hadn’t done anything else.
To get an ArchiWeek ready for archistudentnotes.com, I read the submission, edit where necessary making sure to retain the tone and content of the writer, take quotes I think will resonate with others and then make the associated graphics. This includes the cover page, the quotes page and the titles for each day. I have a system for this so it doesn’t take me long and I’m even able to start work on the next ArchiWeek which will be from @art.ikki so keep an eye out!
I work on content and archistudentnotes projects for a couple of hours and then I’m ready to leave to get to the university as today is a teaching day.
University Tutoring
I grab breakfast and get to meeting with the other tutors prior to the session. We meet for about 15 mins to go over the session schedule, discuss any questions the students had in the last session and just settle into the day.
I teach Architecture in Context (Architecture research and History) and there are 2x 2 hour sessions every other Friday. I also work full time as a Part 2 Architectural Assistant so I make up the time over the 2 week gap.
The day starts with a briefing from the head lecturer, then we get into 2 groups, splitting the class across 2 rooms. The first student task is an e-test on referencing to help the students with their current research document which takes about 20 mins and then the tutors go from student to student giving feedback on the work they have completed so far. The research document is based on a few readings so I’ve had to make sure I know what the work is based on and know enough to be able to mark and give helpful feedback.
At lunch I watch a couple of episodes of Blackish whilst eating in the Student Union and then it was back to the last session presented in the same way as the first.
EVENING
Earlier finish than my full time job, I stopped off in the main university building to see what the second year studio groups have been doing as I was told it was a review day. Got some videos and photos and then travelled home! I’m currently on the sofa waiting for a grocery delivery to arrive before chilling for the rest of the evening.
NOTE FROM THE WRITER
This was fun! Types this all out on my phone in about 10 mins and it was nice to reflect on the day and now have a record of it. I think I will do this as and when I feel like it and of course leave the form open for any of you who want to share a day in the life!
