Week in the life of a 20-year old Architecture Student in Durban, South Africa

Written by Bayanda Phoswa, Edited by Aliya @archistudentnotes

This ArchiWeek we have a week in the life submission from Bayanda a 20-year old Third year Architecture Student living and studying in Durban, South Africa.

Introduction from the Writer:

A 3rd year arch student on the way to finishing undergrad and juggling projects, sport and the quest for the next step in the field. Working without structure is one of my flaws as a student of the field but the determination and love of the work means I don’t stop working on the next task.

Monday

I wake up at 07:30am to prepare for my Design major class at 09:00am.

I then take a 16min walk to campus and then get my work ready for crits as we are working on a cultural museum project.

I go for lunch after class and then spend the rest of the time at the Lan continuing with work. At 15:30pm I go for my tennis practice and finish at 18:00pm. After I continue with the tasks I have due for the week.

Tuesday

I wake up at 10:00am since I have no classes. I have breakfast then prepare for campus, again I walk to campus and then start work mainly at the architectural lan.

I go for lunch and have an hour of socializing with my classmates/friends and we get back to work.

On tuesdays we work till late since I only have access to school computers and not a personal computer.

Wednesday

I wake up at 07:30am repeating Mondays routine of freshening up and breakfast.

I get to my structures class at 09:00am and then my building science class at 10:30am.

I grab something to eat and attend the history class at 12:30pm.

After I go to the lan to continue with work until it is time for Tennis again at 15:30pm. I then go back to my place and then back to campus to work till the am's.

Thursday

Aa Monday and Wednesday Iwake up at 07:30am and prep.

I get to my Technology class at 09:00am and at 10:00am I attend the design crit session getting feedback from the work done from the previous crit.

I again go grab food and have some social time while eating. I get to run personal errands and come back to campus to work in the Lan. I work on design and some theory work due on Friday then later work on my personal portfolio for my applications to practices.

Friday

I repeat the 07:30am routine and get to class at 09:00am for my Theory class.

We get to engage and do presentations on the work we've done from the previous presentations. We are also working on continuous presentations that link to the site and what we are designing for the Design major.

After the class I eat and get to working again with some distractions of course.

I go for tennis then get back to work later. Our work environment allows for us to work around each other and to actually understand how some classmates are tackling some of the work we have.

On Fridays I also work till late working on softwares on the school computers.

NOTE FROM THE WRITER

Although my week seems structured, I am a person who at times overthinks and get easily distracted so getting on with my week is not as easy and simple.

Sport is my one important pause in my un-organized life. Getting through this year had me realising the importance of balance which is what I am working on improving about myself, especially since I will be getting into the work field the next year.
