Crying during your architecture presentation
So it is indeed deadline season. The day you have been working towards is finally here and it can feel overwhelming and scary BUT there are certain things I have learnt myself and seen in others that I would not recommend you do right before your deadline.
Some tutors are insert one of various words I have used to describe bad ex-tutors. They don’t listen to your work, they steer you only to what they like, not what’s good for the project and like to make you feel bad about your work.
You can also have tutors that are nice, supportive and provide constructive criticism that helps you move your project forward without feeling overwhelmed - I would like to think I fall into this category.
I very much hope your tutors also fall into this category but if they don’t please do not let them get to you permanently. In the moment, it will feel bad but brush it off, seek advice from others and come back stronger for yourself, not prove anything to them.
Good luck!
I hope this was helpful for you and if you have any more ideas or comments, please feel free to leave them below.
See you in the next one!
Architecture crits, or my preferred term, architecture reviews, are how you communicate the ideas and resolutions that you have been working on for the weeks or months prior. It is how you show everything, the hours you have spent thinking about your project, the ideas you have tested and the models you have used to explore different ideas.
It is the only way to
Prove you have actually been doing work and have not just found an idea on pinterest and submitted as your own and,
That you know and understand what you are talking about
These reasons make your architecture review one of the most important parts, if not the most important part of studying architecture. Get them right and your ideas are efficiently shared with your tutor, nothing is missed and you finish your architecture review confident, and hopefully with no regrets. Get it wrong and all your efforts can be lost in communication, or I guess lack of communication.
In this blog I walk through the 6 stages of an architecture crit that you need to prepare for: The Intro, Site Analysis, Concept Design, Design Development, Final Design and of course the Questions at the end but first.. how do we prepare?
