21-year old Part 1 Architecture Graduate and Content Creator living in Milton Keynes, England

Written by Moyo Adebayo @archi_v7 Edited by Aliya @archistudentnotes

This week we have a submission from Moyo, a 21 year old Bachelor of Architecture graduate living in Milton Keynes who also runs @archi_v7 on Instagram.

Archive 7 is an excellent platform offering quick and easy to implement advice and tips for architecture students. Moyo has been documenting his journey and work since 2022 and developed his own individual style and flair - check him and Archive 7 out, looking forward to what comes next!

So, lets get on with the week! Would you have tackled the week any differently?

Monday

It’s Monday morning and I’m thinking of trying a new content creation strategy where I shoot 4 reels one day and then edit them the following day.

This would mean in one week I would have 12 fully edited reels made by Sunday. Considering I post 4x a week that leaves me in a good place.

I’m blessed to be in a position where I can live at home and not pay rent. This allows me the luxury of deciding not to do apply for and do jobs way outside architecture or my interests whilst I’m waiting for my Part 1 job to line up.

This however, doesn’t mean I’m being lazy. Through self reflection and prayer, I’ve become really appreciative of this time that I’m not working because I wouldn’t have the kind of freedom I have right now to build the things that I want to build. For example, I’m able to spend time learning about content creation and filming.

I am also in the process of starting an architecture related business that needs a lot of time invested into it to get up and running. This means that when I start working, a lot of projects I’m starting will already be off the ground, so to speak.

Note from Aliya @archistudentnotes: Well done to Moyo for taking advantage of his current situation. It can be so easy to just sit around and wait for something to happen but he is working on himself and future business ideas.

Tuesday

Started off my morning by sending off job applications and checking my emails. So far I haven’t been able to land an interview yet so God willing that’ll change this week.

After procrastinating, I started redesigning my church’s logo. It needed the update and going through architecture school I have the skills to do it. Hopefully my student adobe creative cloud doesn’t run out before I finish it😅

Since it’s editing day, I edited a few reels, remembering that content is an opportunity for me to be noticed by architectural firms. Through architecture school, I realised that my interest in architecture lies in placemaking and cultural identity in design. Especially as it relates to empowering and engaging minority communities. After doing a summer school course called SOS, this and African vernacular architecture are areas that I see myself working in soon enough.

This is somewhat of a niche but when searching for jobs I’m looking for places that do a lot of community engagement and have a lot of social values. This may be a bit picky for a Part 1 job but I’ll see how it goes.

Note from Aliya @archistudentnotes: If you can afford to be picky, be picky.

Something I might try do is talk about some more of these interests in my insta reels, who knows, maybe I’ll be offered a job through DM🤷🏾‍♂️

Wednesday

I went to bed last night thinking I really need to be more active on LinkedIn. My mum gave me advice to connect with some more architects that interest me, which really won’t hurt.

Another thing that won’t hurt is a potential stream of income. I want to make Instagram content for small-medium sized brands and I have realised that I actually have a knack for this. Today I needed to follow up on a brand that may be my first client and fortunately they messaged and we were able to arrange a meeting.

Now it’s just for me to prepare a presentation for the meeting, just with an outline of what I’m offering and how I can make his page better through some light criticism.

Hopefully they won’t be offended 😅

After talking with a few creatives yesterday and showing my Instagram page to them, I was surprised to see how impressed they were with my content, it made me remember how the page is getting to be in a good place. I personally wanted my page’s quality to improve before focusing on numbers as much. So right now I’m just asking myself how can I best create the content that I want to create.

Thursday

Today wasn’t the most productive, little was done which was frustrating.

After applying for jobs for over two months, you start to get frustrated when you’re not doing anything because at least if you’re applying to jobs everyday you’re not missing out on opportunities. But to be honest, you need a break, way more times than you think.

Although I have a to-do list for the week, I didn’t time block any activities for today or tomorrow in my calendar. So I’m not overly surprised that I wasn’t too productive. I may potentially switch up my environment and work in the library tomorrow, I’ll also get some content whilst I’m there.

Note from Aliya @archistudentnotes: Time blocking using Google Calendar has been an absolute game changer for me as my days and weeks have got busier - would highly recommend.

Friday

😅 So, I didn’t end up going to the library but I did go on a much needed walk that allowed me to clear my head and reset for the upcoming tasks.

Some of those tasks included; sending out my portfolio to firms and also designing a workflow for that architecture related business I was talking about with a friend (which will take the majority of the time in the day). Starting a business is quite long but when you believe in its eventual impact it’s so rewarding when you get even a step closer towards realising that dream.

These are essentially the highlights of the week and whilst searching through Instagram I saw a post by Josiah Hyacinth, who asked the question ‘what will you do differently next week?’. Personally I’m not going to hesitate and just follow through more. When it comes down to it, I know the things I need to do and how I’m meant to do them. I just need to trust myself, God and just move forward.

Note from the Writer

I hope whoever reads this gets inspired. Even if it’s just by one thing. God bless🙏🏾

And that’s the week!

A really insightful submission from Moyo who whilst looking for his Architectural Assistant job is also working on himself and building a business. An inspirational read that I myself have learnt a lot from - especially the part about starting a business and believing in its eventual impact. Wishing Moyo all the best of luck on his journey and be sure to follow along on his Instagram where he shares valuable information for architecture students and designers.
